D Choudhury Appointed As Senior Air Staff Officer | Western Air Command
Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury AVSM VM VSM has taken over as Senior Air Staff Officer of Western Air Command. An alumnus of National Defence Academy (NDA), Air Marshal D Choudhury was commissioned on December 22, 1983. Air Marshal D Choudhury is a Fighter Combat Leader and an Instrument Rating Instructor and Examiner.
He has served two tenures at Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), as Instructor and Commandant. He has commanded 15 Sqn, TACDE and two frontline bases as the Air Officer Commanding in Chief (AOC).

About Air Marshal D Choudhury
D Choudhury, Service No. 17335, is an alumnus of Royal College of Defence Studies UK. And a Post Graduate in Strategy and International Security from King's College London. He is also a Master of Philosophy on Defence and Strategic Studies. Diptendu Choudhury was commissioned in the IAF on 22 Dec 1983 and has been in the DTE of Air staff Inspection w.e.f. 26 June 2004. The officer has approximately 3000 hours of active fighter flying and is current with 'Master Green' rating on MiG-21 (T-75 & 96), MiG-29 and SU-30 aircraft.
The officer has immensely contributed towards making the IAF more effective. His thought-provoking service papers on Review of Op Employment of SU-30 aircraft, Op Capability of MiG-29 aircraft, Imperatives of Future Fighter Operations and Rebasing Concept have been well appreciated at all levels. The officer has also put in dedicated work towards revising inspection procedures, and improvement in inspection pattern. He also revised interactive visits to Air/Command HQ and DG's review during AF Commanders' Conference.
An extremely hard working and sincere officer who has been professionally well groomed as a fighter pilot. The officer had to shoulder the responsibility as a Director for almost a year and was, therefore, in the center stage during all inspections. Single-handed he planned and co-ordinated the conduct of 'Best Combat Unit' competition of Fighter Sqns. He conducted it in the most professional manner and has been the active member of the Flying Team while inspecting Wings and Sqns.
The vast and varied flying experience of the officer would be a dream for any Air Defence pilot. Still, his unassuming but firm display of professional attributes is a true reflection of a thoroughbred professional. The officer took it upon himself to undertake the mammoth task of its revision and re-issue. The list of contributions made by the officer for improvement in work efficiency and operational thinking to make the IAF more effective is never-ending.
Major Achievements Of AVSM VM VSM D Choudhury
During his tenure at TACDE, a record number of courses were conducted with a total of 5100 sorties and over 4000 hours of accident-free flying. These courses were conducted on a variety of fighters, transports and helicopter aircraft. He introduced Exercise - Rakshak for Helicopter Combat Leader courses. He also expanded Exercise Akraman by integrating transport aircraft of the Transport Combat Leader course, helicopters of HOEC course and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
Under his command, TACDE produced a large number of tactical concepts and solutions, combat manuals and standard operating procedures (SOP) on operations. He also introduced the air defence simulator and Aggressor Cell at TACDE for operations training and development. He is Fully Operational and Master Green rated on all MiG-21, MiG-27, Su-30K and Su-MKI aircraft. That too with over 3200 hours of total flying which included over 4500 sorties on fighter aircraft.
The officer has the unique distinction of having successfully led three international flying exercises. He was the Director of Garuda 07 the Indo-French flying exercise in India. Thereafter he led the largest Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent for six weeks to the United States of America for the prestigious multi-nation exercise 'Red Rag'. On the way back from the United States of America, he also led the team for exercise 'Desert Eagle' in the United Arab Emirates.
His meticulous planning, realistic work up training and hands-on leadership ensured the IAF contingent for exceptional performance in all the exercises.
During his tenure at Air Headquarters from 05 January 2009 to 24 March 2010, the officer was actively involved in the creation of the Directorate of Operational Planning and Assessment Group. As the Director, he was responsible for strategic and operational planning as well as revision of the IAF Operations Instructions.
Awards Won By The New Senior Air Staff Officer Of Western Air Command
Air Marshal D Choudhury was awarded 'Vishisht Seva Medal' by Hon’ble President on 26th Jan 2007. This award was given for his outstanding professional competence, extreme dedication and distinguished service of a high order. He was a Group Captain when he received this prestigious award.
Thereafter, D Choudhury was awarded 'Vayu Sena Medal' on 26th Jan 2011 for his exceptional devotion to duty. He was a Commodore in Indian Air Force while receiving the award.
On 26th Jan 2018, Air Marshal Diptendu Choudhury was awarded ‘Ati Vishist Seva Medal’ by Hon’ble President Of India.
About Western Air Command (WAC) Of Indian Air Force (IAF)
The Western Air Command (WAC) is the regional command of Indian Air Force with headquarter in New Delhi. It is the largest Air Command of the IAF, comprising sixteen Air Force Bases (AFB), and is responsible for the aerial defence of North India. The current Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief is Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar. He took over Air Marshal C. Hari Kumar on 01 March 2019.
Headquarters Western Air Command, located at Subroto Park, New Delhi, has over 200 bases placed under its command. It has been involved in all major operations in India since independence. Due to its geographical location, the Command has always been the hub-center of all operational activities during any operation.
Some of the major operations handled are Kashmir Operations 1947-48, Sino-Indian Conflict 1962. Also involves Indo-Pak War 1965, Indo-Pak War 1971, Operation Pawan 1986 (Sri Lanka) and Operation Safed Sagar 1999 (Kargil).

About Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar, AOC-IN-C, WESTERN AIR COMMAND IAF
Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy and was commissioned in the IAF as Fighter Pilot in June 1981. He is an Experimental Test Pilot and has flown 42 types of aircraft as Pilot in Command. He has the distinction of having the highest number of flying hours on the Mirage-2000 in the IAF. And over 2300 flying hrs on the aircraft to his credit, and a total of 5100 hrs of flying experience.
He is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and was the Project Test Pilot for the Light Combat Aircraft “Tejas”. Air Marshal Raghunath Nambiar was awarded the Vayu Sena Medal for Gallantry by the President of India for the Kargil Operations.
He was awarded a Bar to the Vayu Sena Medal for flight testing the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) in 2002. It was tested during its first phase of flight testing. He was commended by the Chief of Air Staff in 1991 and by the C-in-C of Strategic Force Command in 2005. He was awarded the Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 2015.
